Who can run for local elections?

  • Anyone who is a Canadian citizen 
  • At least 18 years old  
  • Live in the municipal area in which you are running for at least six months before the election.

How do you get your name on the ballot?

  • First you have to be nominated
  • Complete official papers, provide personal information and the names of those who nominated you. 
  • Pay any necessary fees
  • Your name is added to the ballot

How do you get people to vote for you?

  • You need to let the community know what your ideas are. 
  • Having a campaign committee to help you
  • Create leaflets, signs and posters about yourself
  • Go door to door sharing your ideas
  • Taking part in debates

What happens on election day?

  • People go to the polling station to vote for the candidate of their choice. Whoever gets the most votes wins.
